Natural Sources of Nitric Oxide

Nitric oxide is a naturally occurring, free radical gas produced in the bodies of humans and other mammals. Nitric oxide can increase the level of blood flow to the heart, improving overall health. Because the health benefits of increased nitric oxide are well known, many people seek to increase their own levels by taking supplements. Many natural sources of nitric oxide are available as well.

  1. Foods Containing L-Arginine

    • L-arginine, an amino acid that is found naturally in lean cuts of meat, fish, soy products, nuts and beans, naturally increases the levels of nitric oxide in the body. Consumption of these foods can also help to ensure that adequate protein levels are maintained.

    Excercise

    • Aside from the numerous health benefits of regular exercise, physical activity also naturally increases the body's production of the enzyme that produces nitric oxide in the blood. Nitric oxide protects the lining of the heart, and regular exercise helps to retain nitric oxide levels.

    Fruits

    • Fruits containing high levels of fiber and citric acid, such as oranges, tangerines and watermelons, also help to naturally increase the levels of nitric oxide in the body. Eating a healthy diet, including the recommended daily servings of fruit, has many other health benefits as well.
